Julien’s Auctions is pleased to present to you the 2012 Icons and Idols Hollywood auction on November 9 and 10, 2012 at the Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery.
The auction includes key historical wardrobe items from the past seventy-five years of movie magic including Judy Garland’s Wizard of Oz Dorothy Gale costume with both original pinafore and blouse. The costume is one of the only complete costumes of original pinafore and blouse known to exist (Est. $400,000-600,000).
The spectacular auction includes over 800 lots of film memorabilia and items from the personal and professional life of Hollywood’s beloved stars. Property hitting the auction block include The King Of Cool – Steve McQueen’s jeans from The Sand Pebbles (Est. $1,000-$2,000); McQueen’s racing jacket worn at his record breaking 1970 race at the Phoenix “Winter Sprint” and seen on the cover of the book Steve McQueen: A Passion For Speed (Est. $40,000-$60,000); and McQueen’s own turquoise necklace gifted to him by The Getaway producer David Foster (Est. $1,500-$2,000). Fellow tough guy Bruce Lee is memorialized in this very special auction with items from friends and family including personal jewelry, clothing and weaponry.
Elizabeth Taylor is sometimes better known for her many marriages than her talents as an actress. This auction contains memorabilia from both aspects of her life. In 1959 Eddie Fisher and Taylor married in Las Vegas 3½ hours after Fisher’s divorce from Debbie Reynolds had been finalized. The resulting controversy and gossip plagued the newlyweds. Offered for sale is the marriage certificate of Taylor and Fisher from the estate of Lawerence Kammet, Public Relations Director to Eddie Fisher in the 1950s to the 1970s (Est. $4,000-$6,000). Also from the estate of Mr. Kammet is Taylor’s Golden Globe statuette from the provocative film Suddenly, Last Summer (Est. $30,000-$50,000). In 1951, Edith Head and Elizabeth Taylor created a fashion phenomenon with a bouffant gown worn in A Place in the Sun. The screen worn gown with its layers of tulle and delicate velvet flowers is offered for sale only at Julien’s Auctions (Est. $20,000-$30,000).
Other wardrobe highlights include: Katherine Hepburn’s jacket from Desk Set (Est. $2,000-$3,000); Ann Miller’s gown by Irene from Easter Parade (Est. $1,000-$2,000); Rita Hayworth’s Orry-Kelly designed period gown from The Strawberry Blonde (Est. $4,000-$6,000); Loretta Young’s costume from the 1941 film The Men in Her Life (Est. $2,000-$3,000); Bette Davis’ costume from the finale of The Great Lie (Est. $1,500-$2500); Phyllis Diller’s stage worn mini-dress (Est. $2,000-$4,000); Kris Kristofferson’s jacket from the tragic love story A Star Is Born (Est. $6,000-$8,000); and the king of all super heroes, Superman Christopher Reeves' special effects Superman costume from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (Est. $15,000-$20,000).
Julien’s has once again curated an array of iconic Marilyn Monroe items: Monroe’s purple skirt immortalized in photographs by John Vachon while Monroe rested after an injury in Banff, Canada (Est. $4,000-$6,000); photographs of Monroe on the set of The Misfits by Thomas Kaminski sold with copyright; and Monroe’s personal make-up and beauty items are among over 70 Marilyn Monroe items being offered for sale.
Julien’s is proud to present a collection of items from the estate of Robert Goulet offered for sale for the first time. Robert Goulet’s career, starring on stage and screen, spanned 55 years. Lots include special items from Goulet’s career and personal life. Among these items are: stage wardrobe from the stage productions of Camelot, South Pacific and Man of La Mancha; personal jewelry; travel items; artwork from friend Tony Curtis and caricatures of Goulet by Al Hirschfeld. The assembled property is a testament to Goulet’s legacy as a consummate performer.
Outside of the collection of Hollywood Memorabilia, Julien’s has also prepared an auction filled with Historical and Americana items including: a souvenir piece of wedding cake from the 1981 marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles (Est. $1,000-$2,000) as well as a souvenir piece of wedding cake from newlyweds Prince William and Kate Middleton (Est. $600-$800) that was gifted to members of the Submariners; United States Presidential signed documents and artifacts from the Presidency of Benjamin Harrison to Ronald Reagan, including an 8mm film reel from the 1962 birthday party of President John F. Kennedy that includes footage of Marilyn Monroe, Henry Fonda, host Peter Lawford and many other attendees and performers (Est. $5,000-$6,000).
Other items not to be missed in this incredible sale are: a collection of VistaVision special effects elements used in the production of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Est. $4,000-$6,000); a collection of letters and interviews from one of the 20th century's most influential writers, Ray Bradbury; and blue prints of Snow White’s Castle at Disneyland from 1955.
